Byline: CHUCK SODER

Schmack BioEnergy LLC in Independence is starting to make headway in pursuit of its mission of stopping cities from flushing energy down the toilet.

The company's first pilot project, a biogas plant that converts feces to electricity for the city of Akron's Water Pollution Control Division, has surpassed expectations and could be expanded to handle all the division's sewer sludge, said Brian Gresser, plant administrator.

The company also is moving ahead with plans to build two other biogas plants one in Columbus that's similar to the Akron plant, and one that will run on other types of carbon-based waste in Zanesville.
