Roger Shattuck begins his arrestingly titled Forbidden Knowledge: From Prometheus to Pornography (St. Martin's Press, 370 pp) with two arresting questions: "Are there things we should not know? Can anyone or any institution in this culture of unfettered enterprise and growth seriously propose limits on knowledge?"
For the impatient, I immediately will reveal that Shattuck's answer to both questions is a reflective yes and no. As anyone familiar with his earlier work might anticipate, the chief attraction of this book lies not in its arguments or even conclusions but in the exhibition of the author's sensibility.
