AS feisty Rose Tyler, she proved to be one of the most popular companions ever to share Dr Who's travels through time and space.

But now Billie Piper has been nominated for promotion to the top job in the Tardis - by the Doctor himself.

Scots actor David Tennant, who is leaving the show at the end of next year, has given his backing to the 26-year-old becoming the Time Lord's first female incarnation.

Piper was an instant hit with both fans and critics when she joined Dr Who for its highly successful relaunch in 2005.

And, asked if she could step into the title role when he leaves, Tennant said: 'Why not? ...
