Although the poet is gone, his work lives on and speaks to contemporary taste. Israels letzter Psalm (Israel's Last Psalm), the new edition of Alfred Gong's poetry, comprises nine previously unpublished poems from the Nachlass, twenty-two little-known poems from various early sources, and twenty-one poems from the three volumes that Gong published during his lifetime. Joachim Herrmann had already demonstrated his editorial skills, together with Jerry Glenn and Rebecca Rodgers, in a previous edition of Gong's poetry, Early Poems: A Selection from the Years 1941-1945 (1987; see WLT 62:3, p. 455).
