For the last twenty years, the Pushcart Prize anthologies have published a selection of "the best of the small presses," and even a cursory examination of the work published over these two decades reveals how vital a part of the American literary scene the small magazines are. In addition to performing the task of introducing works by unknown and often commercially risky new talent, the small presses offer established writers a venue for more experimental or less commercially viable publication. The result is the production of literature that is alert, critical, and responsible in the ways it addresses social and artistic problems.
