Essays on African Writing 2, edited by Abdulrazak Gurnah, is a sequel to his earlier collection Essays on African Writing 1: A Re-evaluation (1993; see WLT 69:2, p. 414). The purpose of the second volume is to focus attention on African writing "which followed that of the first 'generation' of post-independence African writers, whose writing was the subject of the first volume." The phrase "African writing" is here given wider parameters by the inclusion of essays on two francophone Maghreb writers - Assia Djebar (Algeria) and Tahar Ben Jelloun (Morocco) - and on Moyez (M. G.) Vassanji, a Tanzanian-born writer of Indian extraction who is currently living in Canada.
