THE National Farmers Union (NFU) in Great Britain announced that it is backing a legal case brought by farmers claiming damages following last year's foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in southeast England.
The case was formally launched in the High Court Oct. 17 and seeks [pounds sterling 1.5] million in damages.
The claim, by 14 livestock farmers whose businesses were affected by the outbreak in Surrey (Feedstuffs, Aug. 13, 2007), has been brought against the Institute for Animal Health and Merial Animal Health Ltd. as operators of the Pirbright facility and against Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) secretary of state Hilary ...
