The news that Agrexco, the export marketing organisation for the bulk of Israeli fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers is to be privatised, sent ripples across the international produce industry.

The company has a 40-year history, and can take the credit for numerous initiatives under the Carmel brand. Last year sales reached a record $650 million.

The privatisation process will take several years according to senior deputy managing director Yosi Pinhasi. He sees the development as a step which will give producers a vested interest in their own industry.
