The A-frame brick building on the one-acre plot had no heating or even flushing toilets. But in 1921, it was one of the few places Chesapeake's black children could go for an education.
South Hill Elementary School, located in the Washington Magisterial District, had only four classrooms and teachers - yet at its peak enrollment, served about 140 children until it closed in 1964.
At 11 a.m. today, Bells Mill Historical Research and Restoration Society, Inc., along with Chesapeake Parks and Recreation, will remember the importance of the school and commemorate the 54th ...
