PETER DE VILLIERS made history when he became the first black man to coach the Springboks.

He broke the mould back in South Africa, but, while the wider world recognised South Africa's desire to 'transform' and embrace its ethnic majority, the rugby diehards have big reservations over his ability to coach the world champions.

This isn't an issue of skin colour but about his ability to do the job and lead one of the best sides on the planet.

His appointment certainly caused a mixed reaction in the Springbok heartlands.
