Nov. 10--Fairlawn, Ohio-based GenCorp's Aerojet division has landed a contract worth up to $600 million for part of an Air Force project to build the nation's space-based infrared surveillance system.
The California division, which GenCorp once tried to sell -- will supply the infrared sensors that will be used to detect the launching of large ballistic missiles from almost anywhere on the planet.
Aerojet also will help build the system that will relay to battlefield soldiers the location, size and direction of those missiles to battlefield soldiers as well as other information that will help the nation's defense respond to such attacks.
