African leaders have called for an immediate ceasefire in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, amid renewed fighting between government forces and rebels.The calls came at a meeting in Nairobi on Friday, as the UN accused the National Congress for the Defence of the People (NCDP) of deliberately killing civilians in North Kivu province.

The UN mission in DR Congo (Monuc) said that an inspection team had reported "serious violations of human rights" in Kiwanja, 80km north of the provincial capital, Goma."Witnesses have described incidents during which civilians lost their lives" as Mai-Mai militia fighters attempted to seize the town ...
