Nov. 15--Goodyear's Green air springs plant opened in 1982, a sign of hope and commitment at the end of back-to-back recessions and all-too-fresh memories of the thousands of rubber jobs that left town.
The plant was heralded as proof that the Goodyear hourly workers' union, the United Rubber Workers Local 2 (now United Steelworkers Local 2), and the company could work together to bring a new plant to the area. This despite years of labor-management acrimony, industry contraction and the flow of rubber jobs to Southern states.
To land the plant, air spring workers gave up future cost-of-living allowances and agreed to a host of work-rule changes, ...
