Petersfield Town Councillors fear the town will be worse off than it is now if it is not included in the South Downs National Park.
Members are worried that if the town is left outside of the park's boundary, as has been suggested, it will also lose its current status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Petersfield and the surrounding countryside receives special protection from development through its status as an AONB. On Monday night the council announced it was joining the fight to keep Petersfield in the park and has drafted a response to send to the inspector outlining its objections.
