Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are the motoring phenomenon of the 1990s. Although once a novelty on America's streets, the toy of the off-road enthusiast, or the "wheels" of the sixties rebel, SUVs now account for 1 of 9 passenger vehicles sold in this country. But are they safe? Ask the families of these passengers and drivers:
* L swerved to avoid a dog in the road, then quickly tried to steer back to his lane. He saved the dog but lost his own life when his Toyota Land Cruiser rolled over on the highway.
