Proscar is an expensive, widely prescribed drug that isn't much better than a placebo in treating symptoms of an enlarged prostate (see HealthFacts, September 1996). Now that the drug has been on the market for four years, more information is becoming available regarding its adverse effects.

The FDA has received reports of gynecomastia in 214 men, aged 47 to 90 years, taking Proscar. Gynecomastia, excessive development of the male breast, is the most frequently reported adverse effect of Proscar, said Lanh Green, Diane Wysowsi and Jean L. Fourcroy of the FDA, in a letter to the editor of The New England Journal of Medicine (12 September 1996).
