Erasmus and the hermeneutics of linguistic praxis.

Contradictions in Erasmus's views on language can be better understood by studying the sources of the contradictions and their effect on hermeneutic practices. Such an analysis reveals Erasmus's consideration of language as praxis, a means to elicit action. In his works, such as 'De copia,' Erasmus maintains that the purpose of hermeneutics is to move the heart of the faithful. Hence interpretation becomes a catalyst for action, in much the same way as linguistic praxis.
