Their friendship began in earnest five years ago - one a young freshman on the Madison Memorial boys basketball team, the other a junior who had been through it all before.
Keaton Nankivil and Kori Vernon grew up near each other on the city's West Side - they each swam at Parkcrest pool - but had never really connected.
That changed when Nankivil made the Spartans' varsity roster as a freshman, joining a talented group that included Wesley Matthews, Mike Nelson, Jerard Ajami and Vernon.
