Shortly after shooting his three children, police superintendent Marius van der Westhuizen was found lying in a pool of blood at his Brackenfell home after he tried to commit suicide.

But paramedics saved him and he spent the following 10 days in a coma.

This emerged in the Cape High Court yesterday when the court heard the evidence of Vincent Beaton, a police director who often advised Van der Westhuizen's wife.

Van der Westhuizen orignally pleaded guilty to the killings, claiming that he suffered from serious depression and did not have any recollection of the murder as a result of post traumatic stress disorder.
