CASE FACTS: In order to accommodate Lurene Hall's frequent kidney dialysis treatments, Dr. Richard Patterson, an interventional radiologist, surgically implanted a catheter that ran from Hall's neck to the top of her heart. The procedure involved piercing the skin on the left side of the neck with a needle, inserting an introducer into the skin, and inserting a guide wire through the introducer down through the jugular vein into the superior vena cava and beyond.
