NEW YORK -- Breadmakers entered the market on a wave of popularity that shows no signs of abating.

More manufacturers are now involved, and channels of distribution have widened while price points, on the average, have dropped. It's all part of the maturing process, however, and the appliance appears to have earned its place as a kitchen staple.

The electric bread machine was developed in Japan in the early 1980s, and introduced to Japanese consumers in 1986. About one million units were sold during the first year, mainly to Japanese homemakers tired of standing in line for fresh bread early each morning.
