CAMP HILL, Pa. - Already the largest drug chain in North America in terms of store count, Rite Aid Corp. has agreed to acquire Thrifty PayLess Inc., which operates 1,007 outlets in the western United States, for $1.3 billion in stock plus the assumption of debt.
"The acquisition of the West Coast's largest drug store chain enables us to extend our geographic reach and provide more opportunities in higher growth areas," says Rite Aid chairman and chief executive officer Martin Grass. "Combining Thrifty PayLess with Rite Aid's strong cost-control culture will reduce selling, general and administrative expenses, and result in significant operational efficiencies."
