The XXIX Olympiad held in Beijing, China, in the summer had a number of remarkable aspects, not the least being the considerably reduced publicity given to sports doping. This was in contrast to the previous five Olympiads where there were a number of athletes failing the doping tests, either immediately before or during the Olympics. Doping scandals did not mar the coverage of the events in Beijing and this appears to reflect the results of a number of initiatives undertaken in many countries over the past few years.
