Hubert Saal, 72, Newsweek magazine's music and dance critic from 1964 until 1984, died on May 4, 1996.
Saal graduated from Yale in 1948 and was a freelance writer, an editor at Town and Country magazine, and an instructor at the University of Miami before joining Newsweek. In his reviews he was a particular champion of the ballets of George Balanchine.
