The Sachsische Staatsoper Dresden, better known as Semperoper, has a great tradition as a site for world premiers and a place where Italian and German traditions meet. In the 18th century, Johann Adolf Hasse, Dresden's court court composer, was probably second only to Handel as a German composer who wrote Italian operas. The line of Italian music directors in Dresden, meanwhile, started with Ristori in the 17th century, and continues today with Fabio Luisi, who himself succeeded Giuseppe Sinopoli as General Music Director of the opera and the Staatskapelle orchestra.
