For most of the year, Munich's marvellous, 1,100-seat Prinzre-gententheater, fashioned after Bayreuth's Festspielhaus, is sadly underutilized. But during the opera. festival, it gets its fair share of exposure, prominently this year with the July 24 premiere of Robert Carsen's new production of Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos.

It must be a mixed blessing for a director to work with a cast that includes Adrianne Pieczonka (Prima donna/Ariadne) and Diana Damrau (Zerbinetta).
