The nineteenth century's reception of Carl Maria von Weber is a topic that is largely unexplored. To be sure, there is no dearth of literature about the performance history of Der Freischutz, about Weber's influence on German Romantic opera, or about Richard Wagner's debts to and thoughts about Weber, but there has been little systematic study of a number of other important issues, such as the reception of Weber's instrumental music, solo songs, and choral music and his impact on cultural areas outside of Germany.
