Whether they plotted and planned to capture on film images that already existed in their imaginations or clicked away at the unexpected, the winners of National Wildlife's twenty-sixth annual photo contest all had plenty of experience as photographers and nature lovers. Take, for example, North Carolina fire fighter Derrick Hamrick, who has wielded a camera for the past 25 years, after starting with his first Instamatic at the age of 15. Before he took his Grand Prize winning picture of a leaping gray squirrel, Hamrick planned every detail and set up his camera equipment weeks in advance.
In all, readers submitted more than 5,000 images to the contest. The winners ...
