The quality of the air we breathe is not as good as it could be, but exactly how much can it affect our health and our chances of developing certain diseases?

The possible health effects of air pollution have never enjoyed such a high profile as they have over the past few years. This has largely been fuelled by the media and certain pressure groups, both of whom have been responsible at times for injudicious and inaccurate reporting of the true size of any health problems. Having said that, there is little doubt that the quality of the air we breathe is imperfect and that it does indeed have detrimental health effects upon certain groups within the population.
