Editor note: SJR asked former St. Louis Globe-Democrat staffer Dennis McCarthy to write about his closest friend Bill Feustel who died Sept. 6. He agreed immediately. The following is his personal obit.
Bill Feustel would never call a woman a bastard. So he anguished about the written profile of an unsavory woman who was, indeed, called a bastard in the lead sentence. Then he changed the lead to read: "When she was born, she had to take her mother's name..."
Bill was the most sensitive, empathetic person I ever knew. But in those bygone days, with or without the beer or whiskey, he could act like one of the most hardened men around. One of his best friends, ...
