Cicero-North Syracuse auto technology teacher Christopher Hawkins drives to school in a 1987 Mercedes Benz that smells like French fries.
His license plate, "VEGGYCAR," says it all.
Hawkins converted his diesel car to run on vegetable oil two years ago. He now drives 3,500 miles - or about four months - before having to stop at the gas station to fill up. Hawkins figures he spends $200 a year on fuel, but saves an estimated $3,000 every year by using free vegetable oil from Jake Hafner's Restaurant & Tavern to power his car.
