The so-called French Paradox-a lower rate of heart disease among the French despite their typically high-fat diet-now appears to be due to their well-rounded diets, rather than to any particular component thereof, such as red wine, olive oil. etc. The report of American and French researchers in the July Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that 90 percent of the 800 suburban Parisians interviewed ate food from all five food groups-meat, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and grains. This is a striking contrast with the statistics gleaned in U.S. studies showing only one third of Americans eating regularly from all five groups every day.
