Three thousand years ago, balding Egyptians smeared their heads with serpent fats and exotic potions brewed from hedgehog hairs and fingernail scrapings in an attempt to regrow their hair. Hair-loss remedies have improved significantly since then-good news, since the problem is so common. Although it's normal to shed up to one hundred hairs a day (three hundred when you shampoo), about twenty million American women - 40 percent of them under age forty - suffer from alopecia, or thinning hair.
