The first Christmas Seal[R] was created by a young woman in 1907. Her name was Emily Bissell. She was trying to help raise money to save a hospital in Delaware that took care of people with tuberculosis. The hospital was in danger of closing due to a lack of money. Emily designed the first Christmas Seal[R] and sold it for a penny a piece in the lobby of the Wilmington Post Office.
The Christmas Seals[R] were placed in envelopes that read:
Put this stamp with message bright
On every Christmas letter. Help the
tuberculosis fight
And make the New Year better.
Emily's goal was to raise $300. That year she raised $3,000. ...
