Article: The boat design process: comments and overview.

While anybody can design a boat and maybe even draw up a set of plans for one, not everyone can predict what will happen once that design gets built and is in the water. It might come as a surprise that the amount of science applied to the design of trailerable boats is slim. In fact, the design of such craft has little in common with ships, where more formal naval architecture is followed.

This isn't to say that boat designers don't know much or don't take their craft seriously. In fact, such professionals often have more hands-on experience in and around boats and know more about how they're put together than their brethren involved in big-ship design.
