For those with a stake in affirmative action, pro or con, the passage last month of California's Proposition 209 seemed to mark a turning point. It was the first time in the 30-year history of the policy that a majority of voters had explicitly rejected the idea that women or minority group members could get special consideration when applying for jobs, government contracts or university admission. The referendum battle now continuing in court has generally been discussed as if the future of affirmative action depends on it. In higher education, vigilance is especially keen: The University of California is poised to shift to a colorblind, class-conscious admissions policy.
