Dec. 17--David Stern speaks softly, but behind the low-key, unpretentious manner is a big stick -- IDL.

IDL, short for Interactive Data Language, is a computer software language used primarily in scientific and mathematical analysis.

It has been used in everything from figuring out Hubble Telescope errors to complex medical imaging, and it is the basis for the company Stern founded, Boulder-based Research Systems Inc.

Research Systems employs about 75 people and has seen revenues grow from $6.6 million in 1994 to $9.7 million in 1995. Revenues will climb to nearly $12 million for 1996, and in 1997 they are projected to grow another ...
