The FCC this week approved by a vote of five to zero the use of so-called "white space" spectrum for use as wireless broadband. Unlike the other broadband wireless frequencies, white space users will not have to bid on or acquire spectrum.

In recent years, US cellcos and would-be cellcos like the pay-TV service Cox Communications have spent $19 billion acquiring wireless spectrum.
