The pre-hearing conference for the Wairau River hydro scheme was nearly aborted yesterday after one of the parties objected to the judge's links to environmental organisation Forest and Bird.

Opening the pre-hearing conference at Marlborough Vintners Hotel yesterday, Judge Jon Jackson said he was connected to Forest and Bird, which supports Save the Wairau's case against TrustPower's proposal.

He explained he would step down as judge after the conference, which was about sorting out procedure, and was in the process of finding another judge to continue with the hearing.
