Dec. 17--Motorola Inc. is weeks away from taking the most important ride of its corporate life, and now comes word that its taxi is being swallowed by the competition.
The proposed merger between Boeing Co. and McDonnell Douglas Corp. comes at a critical juncture for Motorola and its $3.4 billion global- telecommunications project, Iridium.
As the project's prime contractor, Motorola has tapped McDonnell Douglas to rocket most of Iridium's satellites into low-Earth orbit from Vandenburg Air Force Base in California.
But officials with both Motorola and McDonnell Douglas insist the planned merger will not jeopardize the launches, ...
