In this slick age of quick information access and immediate, high-quality output, it's hard to recall the early days of loading those awkward rolls of pin-fed paper into a dot-matrix printer.
Basically, there are three types of printers: the impact printers that produce an image by striking the paper; the nonimpact printers, which produce an image by using a chemical reaction in the paper or spraying a stream of ink; and the electrostatic (laser) printers, which print a complete page using a toner offset and fusing process.
