Introduction
To many Americans, Australia evokes images of the Sydney Opera House, the Outback's Uluru, furry marsupials, and tongue-twisting aboriginal place names like Ngaanyatjarraku. In terms of popular culture, Crocodile Dundee, "footy" (Australian-rules football), the 1970s pop group the Bee Gees, and rock bands INXS and Midnight Oil have influenced our thinking, at least in a superficial way, of our mates in the land down under. Similarly, perspectives of Australia's mainstream settler societies have often been seen through a limited British only lens.
