Trade unions are social organisations that seek to protect and promote economic and non-economic interests of workers both at the workplace and in the larger society. But they are in 'crisis'. This has chastened the rustic unions. The marketization drive has created several vulnerable groups and brought together a number of civil society organisations. There are two views on the dynamics between trade unions and other civil society organisations. The 'hard' view is that trade unions are no longer relevant; they are 'obsolete'.
