The US Bureau of Land Management has conditionally approved a set of natural gas exploration wells in New Mexico's vast Otero Mesa grassland in the southeastern part of the state.
Producers say the region in worth exploring, at the very least, to see what reserves are available. New Mexico Oil and Gas Association President Bob Gallagher says areas neighboring the Otero Mesa could hold energy reserves, too (NGW Jun.16,p2).
But some New Mexico officials and environmentalists are protesting the bureau's support of allowing Harvey Yates Company to drill.
