The Problem
You are a psychiatrist working in a correctional setting. One of your inmate patients has a history of depression and experiences symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, including tremor and awareness of increasing heart rate. He is already receiving partial relief with an antidepressant. You are hesitant to prescribe benzodiazepines or gabapentin because of the potential for abuse and the risk of your patient's being victimized for his prescription, and buspirone is frequently snorted by inmates, so you consider another option.
