For his first New York solo, Atlanta painter Tony Hernandez chose a daunting theme. Surely no subject is more overworked these days then the Holocaust. And given that the 31-year-old artist was raised as a Catholic, his personal connection with the WWII Jewish genocide in Europe--his great-uncle died in a camp--might seem a little tenuous. Yet the 15 paintings and 7 drawings in this show prove once again that an imaginative relation to horror, when exercised sparingly and with technical skill, can yield unexpectedly graceful results.
