Dec. 23--Those stockings hung by the chimney with care are safer hung somewhere else if a fire is roaring in the fireplace.
Harold Beavers, the city of Richmond's chief fire marshal, said Christmas stockings hung from the mantel of a fireplace that's in use are a hazard because a downdraft of wind could blow the fire out of the fireplace.
Jacqueline Atiyeh heeds that advice. She hangs Christmas stockings at a fireplace where she doesn't plan to build a fire, she said.
