Apple, Next to Cooperate on New Operating System, Ready in 1998.(Originated from Austin American-Statesman, Texas)

Dec. 24--Apple Computer users will have to wait well into 1998 before the computer maker delivers an advanced new operating system that runs many existing Macintosh software programs.

That much became clear Monday as Apple and Next Software officials outlined the substantial work involved in creating a new operating system that integrates the two companies' technology strengths.

An operating system is the master control software that runs the computer and works with applications programs that do specialized tasks. The operating system provides the computer with its basic "personality."
