Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that occurs in about 1 percent of the population. It is a disorder of abnormal mood and behaviors with emotional swings that are more than just the usual ups and downs of everyday life.
Sometimes, people with bipolar disorder feel very happy and are much more active than usual. This state is known as "mania."
Other times, people with the illness feel very sad or depressed.
In some cases, people may actually find themselves in a mixed state in which both mania and depression are present.
