The school board of Oakland, Calif., last week set a dangerous precedent by becoming the first to officially declare that its black students, although born in the United States and descended from people who have lived here for generations, speak a unique language called ``Ebonics'' (from the words ``ebony'' and ``phonics'').
According to the board, the linguistic patterns of Ebonics _ sometimes called ``Black English'' _ originate in West Africa and the Niger-Congo region. It is not just one of the many subcultural dialects of English in this huge and ...
